Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)
- Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) -
One of the two companion galaxies to our own Milky Way galaxy (the other is the
Small Magellanic Cloud). The Large Magellanic Cloud was named for Magellan, the
European explorer whose ships were the first to circumnavigate the Earth. It is
a separate galaxy, 50 kiloparsecs (163 x103 or 163 thousand light years) away, and appears
in the southern sky, making it impossible to see from most of the northern hemisphere.
