- The Hercules Cluster (M13) -
Globular star cluster in the constellation Hercules (the hero). The cluster consists of about 100 x 103 or 100 thousand stars which were all born together about 14 x 109 or 14 billion years ago. Globular clusters like this one are the oldest structures in the Universe. The Hercules Cluster is sometimes referred to as M13, the 13th entry in Messier's list. M13 is approximately 25 x103 (25 thousand) light-years away from Earth, and is about 157 light-years in diameter.
