TENNESSEE HISTORY DAY IN MEMPHIS!

Schedule for the day:How to find us:
- Students check in at the registration desk on the main floor of the University of Memphis University Center
- Students may begin setting up at 8:30 a.m.
- Opening ceremony in the Faulkner Lounge on the UC third floor at 9:00 a.m.
- Competition will be held in the University Center (exhibits) and at Mitchell Hall (performances and documentaries).
- Judging all morning
- Lunch break while voting being tallied
- Awards ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Faulkner Lounge.
Lodging:
- Coming from the east on Interstate 40. Follow the signs for Sam Cooper Boulevard. Follow Sam Cooper to the Highland Street exit. Go south on Highland to Central; turn left on Central to Patterson. You are now at the northwest corner of the campus (at #22 on the map).

- Tennessee History Day will be held in the University Center and Mitchell Hall. A parking ramp is immediately adjacent to the UC. Access the ramp from Zach Curlin Avenue. The charge is $5 for the day. You may also park on the street or in the large lots (gray on the map) south of Southern and the railroad tracks for free.
Things to do in Memphis:
- The Homestead Suites, 6500 Poplar Ave, 901/767-5522 ext. 5003. All studios with kitchens. Queen rooms are $54; king or deluxe king (with fold-out sofa) are $64.
- Hampton Inns, 5320 Poplar Ave, 901/683-8500. Doubles and and king size with sleeper sofas for $79 (their regular rate is $86, so mention your purpose in coming here).
- Holiday Inn, Kemmons Wilson School of Hotel Management (WS on the campus map).
- National Civil Rights Museum, 450 Mulberry, in the Lorraine Motel (site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.): Open 9 am to 8 pm every day except Tuesday (closed) and Sunday (1 pm to 5 pm). Adults: $6, $4 for children 4-17.
- Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium and IMAX Theater. 3050 Central. Open Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm; Friday and Saturday 9am to 9 pm, Sunday noon to 6pm.
- Graceland, 3734 Elvis Presley Boulevard. Open 9 am to 5 pm every day except Tuesday (closed) and Sunday (1pm to 4 pm). To tour the mansion (about 1 1/2 hrs): $16 adults; $14.40 students; $6 children (7-12). Tour the mansion, autos, airplanes and museum (about 3 hrs): $25 adults; $22.50 students; $12 children.
- Rock 'n' Soul Museum, located one block south of Beale St. and Third St. Open 10 am to 6 pm every day. Adults: $8.50; youth (5-17): $5.
- Memphis Zoo, located in Overton Park. Open 9-5 every day. Adults: $5; youth 2-11: $5.50.
- Memphis Fire Museum, 118 Adams Ave, in downtown Memphis. Open 9-5 Tuesday through Saturday, Sunday 1-5. Adults: $5; youth: $4.
- Peabody Place Museum, (magnificent Chinese art), 119 South Main Street. Open Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 5:30 pm; Saturday & Sunday noon to 5 pm. Adults: $5; youth: $4.
- Memphis Riverboats, sightseeing trip every day from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Adults: $12.50; $9.50 youth.

- And don’t forget to see the Peabody ducks march at the Peabody Hotel, Union & 2nd Ave at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm everyday. Free, but get there early.
