W. RICHARD JANIKOWSKI - Richard Janikowski is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Memphis. He has published on issues concerning criminal law, criminal procedure, and criminology. Co-Author of Legality and Illegality, published by Peter Lang Publishing. Professor Janikowski is currently completing a book on constitutional criminal procedure. As Chair, he has led the department towards an increased emphasis on applied and community-based research. During the past three years, a substantial part of the department's scholarly and research initiatives have been directed towards efforts involving collaborations with local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies. Professor Janikowski has worked extensively with the United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) on a variety of projects. He is the Principal Investigator for the Memphis Sexual Assault Research Project, part of the United States Department of Justice's Strategic Approaches to Community Safety Initiative (SACSI), is the designated research partner for Project Safe Neighborhoods in Memphis, and is the Co-Principal Investigator on the cross-site evaluation of NIJ's COMPASS program. At present, Professor Janikowski is also serving as Director of the University's Center for Community Criminology and Research, which houses the Community Information Program (designed to operate in conjunction with the Community Safety Information System developed by the National Institute of Justice as part of SACSI,) the Mid-South Training Institute which provides training and continuing education for law enforcement, and the Mid-South Social Survey Program. Professor Janikowski is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission and provides research and evaluation support and training to many municipal and county criminal justice agencies.
